Udaipur: City of Lakes

Udaipur is the rare place that photographs exactly as good as it looks in person, which almost never happens. The City Palace runs the entire length of the eastern shore, and at dusk, when the lights come on inside it and the lake goes still, the whole thing doubles itself in the water.

I spent an evening on a rooftop across the lake watching that reflection change color for two hours, which is not normally the kind of thing I'd sit still for, but there was nowhere else I wanted to be. The old city behind the palace is a maze of whitewashed havelis, most of them now guesthouses, all of them painted the same soft blue-white that gives the town its glow.
