The Chinese fishing nets along Fort Kochi's shoreline are the first thing everyone photographs, and for good reason — massive cantilevered rigs, worked by hand, that have been hauling in the day's catch the same way for something like six hundred years.
Behind the waterfront, the old spice warehouses still smell like cardamom and pepper decades after the trade moved elsewhere. I liked Kochi best in the late afternoon, when the light goes gold over the harbor and the ferries start their last runs of the day.
